"...Tony Blair (2001) by Jonathan Yeo
Posing naked for my favourite contemporary portrait painter, Jonny Yeo, I noticed this proppped up against the wall. He'd painted it on the battle bus during the 1997 general election campaign. Blair hadn't allowed himself to be painted before, so Jonny did two. One is part of the government collection. I don't think Blair knows this one exists. It captured a man at his pinnacle, when the 'new' was still in Labour. Jonny's work is eerily photo-realistic, capturing movement - like a pap shot; a moment in time. So I made an offer he couldn't refuse. When the current Tory leader softned up on gay issues and invited me back to the party, I offered it for auction at the Tories' summer ball. Humourlessly, they refused. I'm so glad now. I don't think Jonny unfolds his easel for less than £100k these days .."
