Mammary Augmentation II

Oil On Canvas

45.5cm x 45.5cm each

2011

The diptychs all represent the same patient before and after a procedure, in this case breast augmentation. The narrowing of the focus to just this part of the body invites the viewer to make their own judgement on whether the transformation is an improvement or not, and a reminder that in many cases these decisions are often down to the personal opinions and choices of the patient and surgeon.

Despite the limited information available, the jump in size is reflective of a fashion for a certain shape from a specific era. The glimpse of tan lines in the after panel is a clue to the subject’s psychological state and perhaps increased confidence or shift in self-image as a result of the operation.
