This picture shows a patient about to undergo an operation to correct a previous surgical procedure. The female torso, reminiscent of a classic Venus motif is juxtaposed with the contemporary phenomenon of surgical aesthetic enhancement.

The surgeon’s markings on the flesh appear superficial and almost decorative, however they are visual clues to what is about to happen and they remind you of the twin role of the surgeon as doctor and artist, making aesthetic judgements about what should change before, almost literally, sculpting with human flesh.
