The subject is having a mastectomy as part of a gender re-assignment operation, an area which has become a much wider topic of conversation since Yeo first started his Aesthetic Surgery Series in 2008. For many trans men and trans masculine people, the double mastectomy procedure (better known as “top surgery”) is a vital part of medical transition. This picture differs from others works in this show in that the procedure is less about vanity and more about identity, an indicator of society’s changing perceptions.
